Drug substance addictions
Addiction is a complex concept and there are many ways to define it. One commonly accepted definition is "any behavior that becomes a preoccupation, seems out of control, in which a person often cannot predict when they will start or stop, and that continues despite harmful consequences."
Addictions, whether they are to substances or behaviours, share these characteristics:
Denial - an inability to realistically admit the negative consequences that result from the activity or substance;
Compulsion - an excessive preoccupation with seeking out or recovering from the substance or activity;
Loss of control - setting limits that you are unable to stick with; Negative consequences - can include legal, relationship, money, job, or self-esteem problems resulting from the addiction. In this section of About Drug Treatment we are presenting an overview on the most common drug abuse substances which are, unfortunately, available and who develop very strong drug substance addictions. In the future we shall include further drugs so please visit this page from time to time for updates.
