The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
The major role in understanding drug abuse and addiction is played by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), who supports over 85 percent of the world's research on the health aspects of drug abuse and also works to ensure the rapid and effective transfer of scientific data to policy makers, drug abuse practitioners, other health care practitioners and the general public.
NIDA was established in 1974, and in October 1992 it became part of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. The National Institute on Drug Abuse is organized into divisions and offices, each of which plays an important role in programs of drug abuse research.
